Day 177 – New Strategy
As I said in an earlier post, the out pouring of support I’ve received for my project recently (although very much appreciated!) had the opposite effect than expected. I felt more pressure to succeed, do a perfect job, be entertaining, which of course led to some serious avoidance behavior around writing. So I came up with a new strategy. When I’m feeling stressed about writing and find myself procrastinating, I will sit down for 30 minutes and write no matter what. During that 30 minutes, I will inevitably realize that the floor needs to vacuum or the air conditioner vent needs to be change etc. Whatever the urgent matter is doesn’t matter, I make note of it and finish my 30 minutes of writing. After my 30 minutes of writing is through, I set my timer for 15 minutes and attend to whatever urgent task I noted. When the timer goes off, I stop even if the task isn’t finish and sit down to write for 30 more minutes. If I hit a state of flow, I keep writing past the 30 minutes. If I’m struggling, I stop and allow myself 15 more minutes to vacuum, make a grocery list, whatever. Then wash and repeat.
I implemented this strategy today and man was my day productive! My anxiety was successfully kept at bay and I was able to write and prepare for a dinner party tomorrow evening with zero stress. I could get definitely get used this. Let’s just hope it keeps working. I’ll keep you updated.
Someday, somewhere – anywhere, unfailingly, you’ll find yourself, and that, and only that, can be the happiest or bitterest hour of your life. – Pablo Neruda
