Day 42 – My Sample Query Letters

Literary agencies come in 2 kinds, those that have very detailed submission guidelines and those that are vague. Those that say please submit your full picture book manuscript with your query letter and those that do not specify. Do I follow the industry standard and include my full manuscript? Or do I just send a query?  I don't know. I've never done this before. So it's trial and error. I will send the full manuscript to the agencies that say to and I will just send a simple query to those that do not specify then go from there. If it that doesn't work, we can always try something else.

Below are two query letter letters I plan on sending. Feedback is more than welcome.

Query 1: Requires Manuscript

Dear Xx. Xxxx,

I am seeking representation for INSERT TITLE, a 245 - word picture book about a young boy’s search for that special something that makes his mother’s cooking better than all the rest. The trouble is, he can’t quite figure out what it is or where to find it.

This manuscript is part of the Write365 project. Write-365.com is an online resource for writers co-created by Leah Weinberger of Edgen Films and myself. In addition, I am a long time member and co-organizer of the Austin Writers Meetup.

This is a simultaneous submission. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Zezelia Olson
